The Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) driver is the driver all CD Rippers us to access the CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD drives when they read Compact Disc Digital Audio (CDDA). If you are using Windows 95/98/ME you need to have one installed. If you are using Windows NT4/2000/XP you don't need one installed but if you have one installed it will be used. If there is no ASPI driver installed and you are using Windows NT4/2000/XP the Generic ASPI Driver that came with the operating system will be used. Most CD rippers doesn't come with an ASPI driver.
To write an ASPI driver is a very big thing. You have to take every other hardware in consideration such as SCSI Hard Drives, SCSI CD-ROM/CD-RW. If you distribute an ASPI driver that affects other programs than the one you are distributing you might get into troubles. That's why we have decided not di write one our selvs. If you install a CD recorder program on these Window versions the ASPI driver is usually overridden.
When you install a CD recorder or so called CD burner program the install file often overrides the ASPI driver with a new one that the one you have installed on your machine. Many CD-RW comes with a program called Easy CD Creator. Some times if you install another CD recorder program you will have to reinstall Easy CD Creator to get the previous ASPI driver reinstalled. I have to do this every the time I install an new CD recorder program on my PC. The ASPI driver that comes with the edition of Easy CD Creator that is specially made for my CD-RW is the only one that seam to have a working ASPI driver.
I have to ASPI drivers available for download but only for Windows 95 and Windows NT these are not made by us they where recomended by SwiftSoft, a third party developer for the software I use to write my programs.
We have tried an ASPI driver at Neros ftp site and the URL ftp://ftp.nero.com/wnaspi32.dll to be working well with Windows XP and Plextor SCSI Drives. In fact it is the best driver we have tested for Plextor drives.
